Chupa Chups® lollipops have been sweetening the lives of millions since 1958 but in order to find out the real beginnings of the world’s best-loved lollipop we have to go right back to the mid 19th century.
Around this time Josep Bernat, the paternal grandfather of the founder of the Chupa Chups® Group, was recognised as the first confectionery maker in Spain on opening a shop in one of Barcelona’s most thriving commercial areas. This shop soon turned into a small sweet factory where his 6 children worked. The business was sadly destroyed during the Spanish civil war, but the art of candy making survived and was passed down through the generations.
In 1950, at the age of 26, one of Josep Bernat’s grandsons, Enric, having accumulated experience working for other confectioners decided it was time to go it alone. |

He opened his own small confectionery factory called Productos Bernat and business boomed. Together with Nuria Serra, his new bride and daughter of another Barcelona confectioner, they set about laying the foundations of their new venture. In 1954, Domingo Massanes, a family friend and owner of a food and confectionery company, asked him to take control of Granja Asturias S.A.; a flagging company producing over 200 products derived from apples. On accepting the challenge, the enterprising Enric negotiated a unique contract; if he was able to pull the company out of its difficulties, he would be entitled to 50% of its income and shares. Under his guidance, just one year later Granja Asturias S.A. began to achieve profits and in 1958 thanks to his unusual contract and the success of the company, Enric Bernat controlled the full 100%. |

| The aspect of the Chupa Chups® lollipop is based on two main elements:
The round sweet. Adaptable to any mouth, this is the perfect size and shape for sucking. When the lollipop is swirled around in the mouth, it gets the taste buds busy and enhances the flavour tremendously.
The stick. The ever-practical stick was originally wooden but thanks to early advances in technology and a forward thinking Research and Development department, this was quickly switched for a more hygienic plastic one.

First came the idea. But a great idea deserves a great name. The very first name
of the lollipop was GOL, Spanish for "goal", due to the lollipop's resemblance to
a football. But Enric Bernat was not totally convinced with this name and decided
to resort to an advertising agency. The outcome of several brainstorming sessions
came up with three options: PALS, ROLS and CHUPS. Enric Bernat finally chose
"CHUPS".
However, the name story does not end here.
In order to advertise their lollipops, the young entrepreneur and his colleagues
created a song that was played on the radio.
It went something like this....
Spanish
Chupa un dulce caramelo,
Chupa chupa chupa un Chups
Que es redondo y dura mucho
Chupa chupa chupa un Chups
Un palito lo sostiene
Para no mancharte tú
Si quieres llenar tu boca,
Chupa chupa chupa un Chups...
English
Get something sweet to lickLick
lick lick a Chups
It's round and lasts so long
Lick lick lick a Chups
It's on a stick
So you stay clean
And if you want to get a mouthful
Lick lick lick a Chups...
Due to the catchy chorus, young consumers were soon flocking to candy stores and
sking for "Chupa Chups®" instead of the actual "Chups®". Ever aware of
his market, Enric Bernat decided to go along with this involuntary change and
following the philosophy of "If you can't beat them, join them", re-christened
his product "Chupa Chups®".
The Chupa Chups® brand name was finally registered in 1962 and in 1964 the
company adopted the same name, eventually changing from Granja Asturias S.A.
to Chupa Chups, S.A.
Once the brand name was changed to Chupa Chups®, the jingle was adapted
accordingly.
Spanish
Toma un dulce caramelo,
paladea un Chupa Chups.
Es redondo y dura mucho,
toma un dulce Chupa Chups
Un palito lo sostiene
para no mancharte tu.
Alimenta y gusta mucho,
cómprate tu Chupa Chups
Gira que te gira,
rueda que te rueda,
de gusto y dulzura
su sabor me llena.
Su sabor me llena
de satisfacción,
por eso al tomarlo
canto esta canción.
Toma un dulce caramelo,
paladea un Chupa Chups
Es redondo y dura mucho,
toma un dulce Chupa Chups
Un palito lo sostiene
para no mancharte tu.
Alimenta y gusta mucho,
cómprate tu Chupa Chups
Toma un dulce caramelo,
paladea un Chupa Chups
Es redondo y dura mucho,
toma un dulce Chupa Chups
Un palito lo sostiene
para no mancharte tu.
Alimenta y gusta mucho,
cómprate tu Chupa Chups
Muy poquito a poco
se va deshaciendo y
mientras lo como
me voy divirtiendo.
Tan grande y redondo
se parece a un sol,
La bola del mundo
Puesta en un bastón!
Toma un dulce caramelo,
paladea un Chupa Chups
Es redondo y dura mucho,
toma un dulce Chupa Chups
Un palito lo sostiene
para no mancharte tu.
Alimenta y gusta mucho,
cómprate tu Chupa Chups (x3).

I sing this song
Get something sweet to lick

Over lunch and in less than one hour this great artist sketched out on a piece of newspaper what was to be the basis of the Chupa Chups@ logo still in existence today. The brand name was centred in the middle of a simple and attractive design based on a daisy. Following the recommendation of Dalí, the logo was then removed from the side of the lollipop and placed on the crown in order to ensure legibility. And the rest as they say, is history. |
|
 |
| The logo continued to evolve and underwent its last change in 1988, when the two styles were integrated into one and colour was added to the key lines around the daisy. However, despite modernisation and the passing of time, the essence has remained the same and the logo continues to have the same universal appeal brought about by that lunch back in 1969. |

In 1958, a Chupa Chups® lollipop cost one peseta – less than 1 Eurocent in today’s money -, which seems to be cheap now but at the time it was the same price as a newspaper!
Nevertheless, this positioning helped the brand to be considered a quality product and therefore enhanced the Chupa ChupsŪ image. Another good point of the 1 peseta value was that shopkeepers did not have to give back some coins!!! |

Distribution
Thanks to his early experience, Enric Bernat understood the importance of effective sales and distribution policies. In 1964 he created a distribution company based in Zaragoza named Compañía Comercial e Industrial. |

An immense fleet of 600 Seat cars were used to distribute the Chupa Chups® lollipops among 300,000 outlets all around Spain. Every one of these cars was decorated with the Chupa Chups® design so that people could recognise them in the streets and also simply advertise the product. |

Brand loyalty and Lollipop culture:
The Chupa Chups® company was using the most advanced practices of the day in terms of brand loyalty, not only with its customers but especially with its employees.
The corporate brand image took on a major role within the company. All members of the sales force followed an eight-day training programme, where they learned how to deliver the merchandise, do the invoicing and set up the Chupa Chups® display, all in one visit. The aim of such a programme was to make the sales force feel completely integrated and supported by the company. |

Technology
According to Enric Bernat: “either you move with the times or you get left behind”.
Innovation in technology has always been a strong feature of the Chupa Chups® group. At a time when the concept of producing lollipops on an industrial basis did not exist in Spain, Enric Bernat decided to manufacture his own machinery to produce his new creation. |

| Since the first production lines were put in motion, this machinery has been updated and renewed as often as necessary to ensure the highest standards are consistently met. Nowadays a huge percentage of Chupa Chups® lollipops still manufactured using the most up-to-date technology at the main plant in San Esteve Sesrovires near Barcelona, Spain. |

These days, 50 years after the first Chupa Chups® lollipops rolled off the production lines and into the mouths and hands of delighted children the innovative spirit and basic principles of Enric Bernat live on. With the acquisition of Chupa Chups by Perfetti Van Melle in 2006, Chupa Chups® still strives to create the highest quality products whiles aiming to please children and parents alike. |
